More on Imogene
Ella Imogene Stevens, known by her stage name Imogene, is an Americana singer-songwriter based in North Carolina. Her music is influenced by country, folk, jazz, and rock traditions. Imogene’s repertoire of original music includes folk ballads and energetic country rock tunes. Imogene's musical journey began at the age of five when she started taking piano lessons with Charlotte NC’s local music education non-profit, Arts+. It wasn’t long before she was composing her own songs, from there her love for songwriting only grew; at 15, she recorded her first album of 16 songs. At her album release show with the Evening Muse, Imogene raised over $3,000 that was donated in full to Arts+.
Imogene's artistic growth continued in Charlotte until the summer of her junior year, when she attended summer camp at Interlochen Center for the Arts. From there she was accepted into Interlochen’s prestigious arts academy program, where she finished high school, majoring in music and honing her songwriting skills. There, she grew a strong foundation in music theory and performance, working alongside peers and mentors who helped develop her skills; at Interlochen Imogene sharpened her abilities on the piano and guitar, and learned the drums and electric bass. Imogene is currently collaborating with Interlochen student and co-producer Kaz Fukuda, with whom she is currently working on her second album.
Imogene believes strongly in the power of live music to unite and connect people, creating communities through shared experiences. This belief drove her to, at just 16 years old, take the bold step of founding her first band; in Dust Box Band, Imogene acted as the band leader. She went on to book, manage and lead the group on a two-week East Coast tour; the four songwriters traveled from South Carolina to New York City, playing eleven shows. This entrepreneurial spirit and leadership have been integral to her musical ventures, setting the stage for her goals to continue a career of live performance.
Imogene references her biggest musical inspirations as being iconic artists like Paul Simon, Joni Mitchell, Brandi Carlile, and Nathaniel Rateliff. Her many live performances have led her to the opportunity to share the stage with notable artists such as Futurebirds, Fireside Collective, Dar Williams, Rett Madison, and Joshua Davis.
Currently, Imogene is leading her second band, Imogene and the Box Car Band. The group will hit the road in late June 2025; traveling throughout the Carolinas, Tennessee, and Georgia, the talented young musicians create interesting takes on classic songs with fresh vocal harmonies and new instrumental arrangements. Imogene will attend the University of Georgia in the fall of 2025, studying business and music.
When she’s not making music, Imogene enjoys hiking, attending church events, mountain climbing, and scrapbooking—activities that allow her to connect with nature and unwind. Imogene attributes achievements and drive to her family, and her father in particular, whose support and enthusiasm have made all of her many accomplishments possible.
